The holiday season was frenzy and we all got our adrenaline pumping with such fervor towards the last week of December 2016. The excitement was palpable in the air, most offices and homes were decorated with Christmas decorations and most people generally tuned to the “rest mode” even when not on holiday or time off from work. This is understandable as after having worked from beginning of the year to end of year, the time to relax and take stock was approaching. Now that the anticipated holiday season is over and we are fully back at work to start a new race in 2017, what are your expectations?
The new year brings with it a new drive, new energy and new plans. This is the ideal time to look at yourself and your company with fresh eyes and see what you intend to achieve for the year. It is now time to swing into the “work mode” and activate your plans.
Whatever the scale of the business, we know all business owners would want to strive to improve their performances vis a vis increasing their clientele base and market share, creating more visibility for their brands and of course increasing their revenue. How then do you get yourself out of the “rest mode” that the holiday season normally foist on one’s psychology and work earnestly to getting things kick-started for the year?
Here are a few quick tips to work on as you plan your way into a renewed and re-focused year.
Have a Short term Plan or Goal –
I once had a boss who was so passionate about meeting ones target and he always told us then, that whatever impact we would make in a given financial year, would be seen in what kind of performances we were driving at within a ninety day period as the first ninety days agenda as Business Managers was very critical. According to him, those 90-days were enough to differentiate mediocre from exceptional leaders who can deliver on target.
If a new Manager were to come on board, the same 90-days principle applies to them before the expected six (6) months confirmation period. This can be likened to the first 100-days celebration in office that political office holders tend to incorporate in their drive to get their citizenry measure their success and accomplishment during their time in office.
As Business owners, you should endeavour to write out your plans for the year and break them down into short term goals of 3-4 months period. The plan should include resources, steps and actions to take within the time frame for ease of assessment. At the end of the time frame, the business owner can measure their performance and celebrate if need be or double their effort to achieve greater result in subsequent months.
Office De-Cluttering or Re-designing
Why get stuck with the same office setting? Try a bit of creativity by re-arranging and re-designing your office space if you have spent up to three (3) years or more in the same position. By tinkering with the general arrangement, you can generate more positive vibes that can increase output and productivity, optimize workflow and boost employee morale. This idea may be tossed off but wait a moment; same idea is typified by the Elton Mayo’s Hawthorne effect which showed that workers are influenced by their surroundings more than they are by their individual abilities. This information is vital for business owners, if your team is hitting a plateau, the elements of the Hawthorne effect can help give your team a nudge either by physical change, that is through re-designing or re-arranging the office, arranging your filing system, changing the lighting effect or taking the time to observe how your team works by offering them support and understanding which can improve your company’s productivity. What do you stand to lose if you try this out?
Assess your Team.
What kind of team do you have on board? Who is on your team and what kind of drive do they have? Having the right team will go a long way in fostering the right energy level in your company and also help awaken your drive towards work. Do not start your year with the same baggage as last year in terms of staffing as a weak team will affect your overall performance. Shed off the weight where necessary and stop dithering in a bid to be nice as the cost of having such people around you can de-motivate others, reduce your productivity and cause loss of revenue.
Promote Your Business Online: This is an opportunity to create brand awareness of your business and gain valuable customer insights that you can covert to useful information based on the number and type of data available on the social media platform. It is quite inexpensive when compared with the conventional marketing medium such as television, radio and print media marketing. Why not put a tidy sum for this purpose in your budget plan for the year? Get to know your target market and know the right social media platform to engage in. These platforms have become marketing giants based on their product offering. Having a presence on this platform is no longer optional for any business.
In any business setting, networking involves meeting people and it is quite important for your personal and business development. As a business owner, you have to take the lead by building relationships and taking time to attend training, workshop, trade shows etc. As you network and surround yourself with people of like minds and ambition, you are likely to make progress as a company. You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge, make connections, have more opened opportunities and at same time, boost your confidence level.
Wishing you the best in 2017.
Enjoy your week!
